Katharine stared blankly into the darkness beyond the window of the library, numbed by what she had just picked up on the radio transmission. She pulled back the blackout blinds slightly, confident no bombers would be going overhead so early in the morning. Dawn had yet to break. During the night snow had fallen. She rubbed her hands to get warm, the fire in the grate not yet giving out sufficient heat to warm the room to a comfortable temperature. Dazed, she replaced her headphones over her ears.

Nothing. Total silence.

She barely heard the grandfather clock chime 5 o'clock in the hallway. Her mind filled with the panicked screams of the men's final moments. She had heard it all over the radio. It wasn't them she worried about – they were the enemy. It was Jonathan. He must have suffered with them. It might even have been one of his screams she'd heard amongst the terror and chaos. Sir Charles had promised her forty-eight hours' protection on this one. He had broken his promise. For the first forty-five minutes of her shift there had been only sporadic transmissions from the U-boat. Then sudden pandemonium had broken out. She had ascertained it had been heading for the strait between Sweden and Denmark.

She stared blankly at nothing in particular. Still nothing came over the radio equipment. Now Jonathan was gone and she still didn't have answers to her questions. Did her husband have any part in Jonathan's original capture in Dachau? Did he have anything to do with Jonathan's death that morning? She dismissed the last notion, trying to rationalise that George was no killer. He probably didn't know Jonathan was alive then, let alone working on a U-boat. As soon as she could, she would phone Sir Charles.

The sound of light footsteps down the passageway entered the library. ‘Madam, are you alright?’ asked Fraser.

‘What, er,’ her distracted reply gave him cause for concern. ‘What time is it Fraser?’

‘Five thirty, madam.’

‘You're up early.’

‘Yes, madam. I couldn't sleep. Are you all right? You seem distressed.’

‘I'm fine.’

‘Would you like a cup of tea?’

‘Yes. Thank you Fraser. That would be very nice.’

He pattered off down the corridor to the kitchen. Katharine turned back to her scribbled notes of the last moments of the crew. She scanned her writing:
